Obama rolls in South Carolina

On Saturday, Jan. 26th, Senator Barack Obama rolled to a decisive victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary, receiving 55 percent of the vote, followed by 27 percent for Sen. Clinton, and 18 percent for Sen. Edwards.

Voting Machine Saga Continues!

After the voting machine debacle, after being highly criticized by both major Colorado newspapers for his handling of the situation, after repeated calls for leadership from the County Clerks Association on the issue, and after losing the confidence of many state congressman, Mike Coffman continues to fail.

Tancredo Lowers Expectations

With the reality of amazingly low poll numbers staring Tom Tancredo in the face, our congressman has dramatically lowered expecations of success in the Iowa straw poll scheduled for August 07'.  Mr. Tancredo now declares that a fifth place finish would be a victory for his campaign.  A rather significant retreat for someone who claims the immigration movement will propel him to the White House.

Whether it is denying the existence of Global Warming or his Non-belief in Evolution, by most expert accounts, Mr. Tancredo has been a disappointment and has even failed to live up to his reputation as a single issue, immigration, candidate.

These polls would seem to indicate what C4CD6 already know; that Tom Tancredo is not a desirable representative of the people.

Immigration Reform KIA?

ACS

Despite bipartisan efforts to forge comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate fell well short of the 60 votes needed to bring it up for debate on the Senate floor.

The Senate bill would have provided for new investment in border security and technology, and allowed employers to hire foreigners under a temporary visa program if they can prove they are unable to hire American workers for the same job. Visa-holders would be able to apply to stay in the United States (eliminating a potential source of new illegal immigration), and would be issued tamper-proof identity documents (ending the use of faked Social Security numbers and addressing our National Security concerns by knowing who is in our country).

The bill would also have allowed illegal immigrants already here to regularize their status, but not easily; they would have to go to the end of the line to become citizens, pay a $5000 fine, stay employed for a prescribed period, pay back taxes and return to their country of origin before beginning the process of citizenship.

Most political analysts believe that the setback means immigration reform, of any sort, will not pass in 2007.

C4CD6 Veterans OpEd: The Enemy of My Enemy

War Pic

On May 31st, Mohammed Adbul Khaliq, the Mayor of the Amiriyah neighborhood in Baghdad, requested that American forces not interfere in the fighting in his area because, as he put it, "if the Americans interfere, it will blow up, because they are the enemy of us both, and we will unite against them and stop fighting each other" he said.

Most Americans would probably assume that the Amiriyah residents are fighting against a group of Shia militants. Unfortunately, that assumption would be wrong. The Mayor was actually referring to what the U.S. Military calls "foreign fighters", and what the U.S. press generally refers to as "Al Qaida in Iraq".

It must be clearly understood that the people of Iraq do not necessarily want any of these foreign fighters in their country. They are simply using them as a tool in the insurgency. It is the modern day Iraqi equivalent of the enemy of my enemy is my friend.  Unfortunately for the "stay the course" crowd, the actions of this Baghdad neighborhood makes the case for redeployment even stronger and highlights the political reality that Iraqi's thrust for self determination, not occupation.  [Read More about Iraq from a veterans point of view]

Quicktakes June 07: Since the last C4CD6 newsletter

The Pentagon announced that 122 Americans died in Iraq during the Month of May, making last month the third deadliest month on record for our American troops.

Colorado's own Ken Salazar played an important role in forging an immigration reform compromise in the Senate, only to have the legislation filibustered by the Republican minority.

Tancredo Bombs in First Debate

Tancredo Dejected

Tom Tancredo is now ranked 11th, amongst 10 Presidental Candidates according to a MSNBC/National Journal analysis article

What many of us in CD6 have known for years the rest of the country is finally beginning to see; Tom Tancredo is a single issue politician who is out of touch with mainstream America.
